Site Visit to Plymouth Life Centre
Wednesday 22nd September 2010
Start Time - Meet @ Site Office 5.15pm

The vision for Plymouth 2020 is that it becomes "One of Europe's finest, most vibrant waterfront cities, where an outstanding quality of life is enjoyed by everyone". The Life Centre is an important part of this strategic objective. It is to be a landmark in Central Park and will become a premier sport and leisure destination in the South West, to be used by all members of the community including elite performers.
The proposed Life Centre, a large wet and dry sports and leisure complex will address many of the above concerns by providing a readily accessible range of indoor health–promoting facilities housed under one roof. The Council's health promoting business plan, prepared for the project, forecasts approximately 1.2 million users per annum.
Central Park is by tradition the heart of Plymouth's recreational and sporting life and the Life Centre is central to the City's long term master plan. The Life Centre will help to revive an historical link between Central Park and the present and future generations of Plymouthians.
As one of the best leisure facilities of its kind in the South West and one of the country's leading centres of aquatic excellence, the Life Centre will underline Plymouth's growing credentials as a premier venue for local, national and even international sporting events.

Facilities will include:
- A family leisure pool with flumes, 'beach entry' and bubble pool
- A 10-lane, 50-metre swimming pool with moveable floors and submersible 'booms' allowing flexible use
- One of the top four diving pools in the country, also offering a moveable floor so it can be used as a standard pool
- A dry side training facility for competitive divers
- An innovative climbing zone with 15-metre wall, aerial assault course, bouldering and abseiling
- An eight-lane bowls centre which will be one of the best in the region
- A 12-court multi-use sports hall
- One of the largest fitness suites in the city, with around 150 stations
- Multi-purpose areas for dance and martial arts, which can also be used for a crèche and soft play
- A relaxing oasis with sauna, steam rooms and showers
- And a youth gym, squash, training and studio spaces.
The Life Centre will be accessible for all users, with dedicated disabled parking, level access throughout the building and disabled bowls buggies, as well as special provision for people with profound disabilities. It will be located in Pellow's Field, in front of the Mayflower Centre (which will be demolished when the Life Centre opens).
